Ambassador Pietro Ercole Ago is the Secretary General of the CEI-Executive Secretariat in Trieste. Among his current tasks are the overall management function of the Secretariat, the liaison to CEI structures, specifically to the Heads of Government, Ministers of Foreign Affairs and other high level meetings, the meeting of Political Directors and the CNC, the representation of the CEI in outside events, advisor to the CEI Presidency and to the CEI working bodies, as well as administrative and legal questions, financial management and relations with Italian authorities in the above mentioned areas. Graduate in Law, Ambassador Ago started his diplomatic career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Italy (General Directorate for Political Affairs) and served in the embassies of Prague, Nairobi, Washington and Vienna. In 1986 Ambassador Ago was Head of the Office for Neighbouring and Balkan States at the General Directorate for Political Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Italy during the conflict in the Former Yugoslavia. In 1995 Ambassador Ago was nominated Italian Ambassador to Budapest, with secondary assignment to Chisinau from 1996. In 1999 he was appointed Head of the Permanent Mission of Italy to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg. Prior to the CEI-ES he served as Diplomatic Counsellor to CASD – Ministry of Defence from 2004 to 2006. Ambassador Ago was one of the founders of the Central European Initiative, starting with the “Quadrangolare” in 1989 and until his appointment in Budapest in 1995.

Gerhard Pfanzelter, born in 1943 in Innsbruck (Austria), is a prominent Austrian diplomat. In January 2009, he has taken up his duties as Alternate Secretary General of the CEI Executive Secretariat after having served, from 1999 to 2008, as Permanent Representative of Austria to the United Nations. On September 7, 1999, he presented his credentials to the United Nations Secretary-General. In 2000 he served as Vice-President of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, and in 2002 he became Vice-President of the 57th United Nations General Assembly. During the first half of 2006 he chaired the European Union in New York during Austria's Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Dr. Gerhard Pfanzelter has recently successfully led in New York Austria's campaign for a non-permanent seat in the Security Council for the period 2009-2010. Previously, from 1983 to 1989, Gerhard Pfanzelter had served as Austria's Ambassador to Senegal, Gambia, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Guinea and Mauritania. He then was appointed Ambassador to Syria for a four-year term, ending in 1993, when he became Head of the Department for International Organizations in the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Ambassador Pfanzelter started his diplomatic career in Rome. He has a law degree obtained at the University of Innsbruck and an M.A. in International Relations from the School of Advanced International Studies in Washington D.C.

Minister Mykola Melenevskyi, a career diplomat seconded by Ukraine, is the Deputy Secretary General of the CEI-Executive Secretariat. Min. Melenevskyi joined his assignment in Trieste in 2006. His responsibilities cover coordination with the CEI Parliamentary Dimension at the level of Parliamentary Committee, General Committees and Parliamentary Assembly meetings; coordination of activities of other regional organizations; care of the CEI Interregional and Cross-border Cooperation, CEI Youth Forum; liaison with the respective authorities of Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine. Graduate in International Relations, Min. Melenevskyi joined foreign service of Ukraine in 1992 in the Protocol Department. Continued his diplomatic career in the Department of Bilateral Relations/Europe, Directorate of the UNO and other International Organizations. Was posted in the Embassy of Ukraine in Greece, deployed as the Deputy Head of the OSCE Centre in Kyrgyzstan, Central Asia. Has the diplomatic rank of Minister Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary 2nd class.
